Playrooms Update Notes (2026): Launch Patch and Fixes

The Playrooms update timeline for 2026: the November 4 launch content, the October demo patches, the 1,000,000,000 Balls event and key fixes.

Last Updated: 2026-11-05

Quick answer: Playrooms launched on November 4, 2026 with a content update that added the whiteboard, two-handed tools, a colour-sorting achievement, four languages and a community ball-count event. The October demo patches fixed controller support, added the Lightmap Resolution setting and reworked several room details.

Lower Lightmap Resolution first

If the lights-out sections stutter, set Lightmap Resolution to Quarter. It is the one performance option added specifically for the blackout sections.

The launch update (November 4, 2026)

The full game launched at 19:30 CET with a 20% discount. The launch build was not the same as the final demo; it added:

  • The whiteboard upgrade. A pen, an eraser, lines, rectangles, circles, four brush sizes, undo and redo. It is a planning tool for routes and room numbers.
  • Two hands. The ability to carry two tools at once, which changes routing in the large rooms.
  • A new colour-sorting achievement. "Colour is a distraction" rewards filling a pit with a single colour.
  • Four languages. French, Spanish, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese were added to the existing English.
  • The 1,000,000,000 Balls community event. Every ball delivered counts toward a global total, with three milestones at 100 million, 500 million and 1 billion. The event runs until November 15, 2026, and the rewards are unannounced.
  • More content than the demo. Five additional rooms, new tools including the vacuum robot, more upgrades, more dark content and more story notes.

The launch build is the baseline for everything below. If a guide mentions a feature that is not in your demo, it is probably a full-game addition.

The October patches

The demo was updated several times before launch. These changes carried into the full game.

October 20: Demo update

  • Added an on-screen stamina bar.
  • Controller fixes: dropdown confirmation, settings navigation order, Reset/Apply/Exit reachable, directional input no longer swallowed, larger shoulder-button symbols, clearer mode selection, Balli's tips reachable with a controller, whiteboard pointer on the left stick.

October 15: Lightmap Resolution

  • Added a Lightmap Resolution setting with Auto and Quarter options.
  • Fixed stutter when the lights turn off.

This is the setting to lower if the blackout sections drop frames. It is the single most useful performance option in the game.

October 14: Room and UI fixes

  • Ball pits now take on the colour of the balls delivered to them.
  • Waiting Room balls that pass through a door now reliably reach the other side.
  • Classroom surfaces refreshed.
  • The hotel door in the Playroom's exterior view was corrected.
  • The computer's X button now closes programs.
  • Pause and settings backgrounds are blurred.
  • You can continue from a save even if the shift ended with an empty pit.

October 13: Interaction and controls

  • E is now the interact key for doors, pits, dispensers and devices.
  • Tool keys are 1, 2 and F.
  • Added sprint and crouch key hints.
  • Short hints stay on screen longer.

October 12: Demo launch

The free demo (Trial Shift) went live as a separate app. It was originally planned as the full release date, then moved to November 4.

The 1,000,000,000 Balls event

The launch event counts every delivered ball globally. The milestones are 100 million, 500 million and 1 billion, and the rewards are a surprise. The event page is the Steam news post for the launch; there is no separate signup.

If you want to contribute, the fastest way is to keep delivering after the story. The 100,000-ball achievement and the event pull in the same direction.

What still needs fixing

As of November 5, 2026, the community-reported issues are:

  • Balls stuck inside walls in the Poolroom and the Hotel ceiling.
  • The School locker capacity bug, where a burst spawns too few balls if your hands are full.
  • Occasional graphics driver crashes on some cards.
  • Controller recognition issues on desktop, fixed by disabling Steam Input for the game.

The stuck-ball issues have workarounds; the stuck balls guide→ covers them. The locker bug is preventable by emptying your hands before opening a locker.

How to check your version

Steam updates the game automatically. To confirm you are on the launch build, check the game's properties in Steam or the title screen version number if one is shown. The demo and the full game are separate apps, so a demo update does not update the full game.

Should you wait for patches?

No. The game is playable and the known issues have workarounds. The launch build is the content-complete version; patches will fix bugs, not add rooms.

If you are sensitive to crashes, update your GPU driver first and lower the Lightmap Resolution setting. If you are waiting for a sale, the launch discount is the obvious window.
